    School Board=Spoiled Brats?

Just one more reason to leave Wise County, the laughingstock of Virginia:

Wise County supervisors bicker over joint meeting By Steve Igo

WISE ? Wise County supervisors on Thursday clashed over a joint meeting proposed between the Board of Supervisors and the Wise County School Board, a session designed to promote better communication between the two boards while seeking common ground over the high school consolidation issue.

Common ground was prime real estate at the supervisors? workshop session Thursday centering on a resolution offered by Supervisor Robby Robbins that will come up for a vote at next week?s action meeting. The resolution opposes consolidation and advocates retaining the existing six high schools.

Supervisor Steve Bates said he was ?puzzled? by the need for a joint meeting with the school board if Robbins? resolution is adopted. Robbins said the school board ?decided not to bring everything to the table? when it voted last week to accept the supervisors? invitation for a joint meeting to iron out differences over consolidation, as long as the discussion focused on consolidation.

Robbins insisted that if the board adopts his anti-consolidation resolution next week, that opposition ?will still give us points for discussion? with the school board.

?I don?t see that,? Bates said.

Chairman J.H. Rivers ? up until a month ago in favor of consolidation but now opposed ? said ?everything should be on the table? during the proposed joint meeting, and he didn?t believe a resolution by the Board of Supervisors opposing consolidation would make a joint meeting any less viable.

Supervisor Dana Kilgore said if the anti-consolidation resolution is adopted, a joint meeting with the school board would be little more than a ?mass production? accomplishing nothing. She added that a professional facilitator supervisors also propose to hire at taxpayer expense wouldn?t have anything to facilitate.

Robbins said the school board ?already told us? what position that board has on consolidation, and Kilgore and Bates reminded Robbins making decisions on behalf of the school division is what a school board does.

    ?That?s their place,? Kilgore said.

?Tell me what purpose is the (joint) meeting with that resolution,? Bates asked Robbins.

Supervisor Robert Adkins asked Robbins how the county could afford to continue to operate six high schools and offer equitable educational opportunities to all students. Robbins said the Board of Supervisors and the school board have no right making decisions for the people of Wise County ? or at least on the magnitude of consolidation ? and said the people should decide the issue by voting on a bond referendum.

Robbins said eight people on each board making a decision that ?will affect every man, woman and child? in the county for decades to come ?borders on the immoral.?

Rivers said the entire issue of what to do about the county?s high schools should be revisited in order to seek another outcome.

?Maybe we can fix the spokes,? he said, ?and not have to fix the whole wheel.?

Kilgore said Robbins and Rivers should just go ahead and take over management of the school division.

?Why don?t you all just have a resolution next week to abolish the school board? It sounds like that?s what you all want to do,? she said.

Under Virginia law, a county board of supervisors has no authority to dictate policy or any other decisions to a county school board, but does control the purse strings to a large extent.

Robbins said the Board of Supervisors established a $42 million debt ceiling the school board seems not to understand because the school board keeps coming up with consolidation plans exceeding that limit. The latest consolidation plan proposed by the school board is estimated to cost $72 million.

?The school board is acting like spoiled brats,? Robbins said of that board?s dogged pursuit of consolidation and the resulting funding impasse.

    Oh yes it does.

What lunacy all of this is. I could have swore part of your job as a superviser was to represent your people and make the decisions that will affect "every man, woman, or child". Do your job.

They are just taking their cues from the one's in Washington who have no desire to do what they are supposed to do and represent the people of their areas and do what they want you to do not what you think is best for them.

I was actually thinking of the Scott County SB when I said that.

I really don't know why. Its in one of the best shapes in the area as far as school systems go.

Mostly because they wont return phone calls or emails for the past two months. That and how they plan on making Scott a consultant along with a few others. Dont know how true it id because I can not get a reply through email or get the run around on the phone. So myself I am fed up with them. Elections are coming up soon and I cant wait to run in to one of them at a ball game.

I don't know about all of that, Stripes...they just got finished axing some promising young teachers, and cut some bus routes in order to dump 6.5 million dollars into a soccer stadium.. Where's the rational thinking in that? They effectively took from the student population, increased class size, and took from their employees in order to build something that will be used by a VERY limited segment of the population..I think they need to get their priorities in order and stop their wasteful spending, cuz come December they'll be whining again that they don't any more money...all the time hoping everyone has forgotten that they dumped 5 years of payroll across the river behind the christian school. Go figure...
...And if you ain't down with that, I got 2 words for ya....
